Who can apply for SSA funding

Non-departmental and departmental Faculty of Science student groups, individual Faculty of Science students (ex: for conferences), as well as other initiatives from other entities that would directly benefit Faculty of Science undergraduate students.

Conditional approval for events

We ask that your request(s) for funding for events you plan to have are submitted prior to the event occurring and purchases are made for the event, to receive conditional approval. For this you would provide the estimated costs for the event and how much you would like for SSA to cover.

The purpose of this is to ensure that you know in advance how much funding SSA can provide for the event, this way you have a better idea of how much you would like to spend for your event in total (ie. including funding from other organizations).

After a conditional approval is set for an event, we ask that you follow up with the receipts for the actual spending for the event, and we will then send over the funding as soon as possible, up to the total amount already approved (or under if the spending was less than the estimated amount).

*Funding requests for events that have already occurred are permitted, however SSA is not responsible/obligated to pay for the full budget for the event despite expenditures already having been made. Your request will be processed as normal and, as such, there will be no guarantee of approval.

The process that follows your funding request form being submitted to SSA

Funding requests are first presented to the Executive Committee within SSA, during which the request is discussed and considered, taking into account the limitations set by our Non-Departmental/Student Funding Requests budget. Once a decision is made, it is then presented to the full Council for approval. Following this, you will be contacted via email about the decision made for your request and, if approved, details on sending you the funds.

*Once your form is submitted, SSA will have received your request. However, if you have not heard back within 3 weeks of your submission, please follow up by emailing science.studentsassociation@umanitoba.ca

What SSA/the Executive Committee takes into consideration when processing and considering funding requests

*Please note that all of the following points may not be applicable to your request, and this list is not entirely exhaustive of the factors considered, but is meant to provide a general insight into what the Executive Committee and SSA Council consider important when considering funding requests.

  • Does this event/project benefit the Science student body?

  • What is the impact of this event/project?

  • How many Science students can benefit from this/will be in attendance at the event?

  • Are the expenses reasonable? (Ie. In the expense breakdown, are the items purchased unnecessarily costly?)

  • How much of the current Non-Departmental/Student Funding Requests budget remains for use?

  • Have you received funding from us already during this fiscal year? If so, how much was approved and how many requests were submitted/approved?

  • If SSA has previously funded your event/project, how much funding was provided by us in previous years?

  • Have you put in a reasonable amount of effort to pursue other funding options as well?

If there are documents or other attachments that would be useful for you/your organization to submit for funding approval, please send the attachments separately to science.studentsassociation@umanitoba.ca. Please make sure to include some details on yourself/your organization and which funding request the email is pertaining to.
